Abstract:

This post highlights the collaboration between the State University of Minas Gerais (UEMG) and UNIFEI, fostering a sense of shared achievement and community among regional stakeholders. The news piece, reported by Breno Eustáquio, announces the publication of the scientific article "Curricular paradigms, new technologies and engineering" (Paradigmas curriculares, novas tecnologias e a engenharia) in the Revista de Casos e Consultoria (UFRN Press). Notably, this interdisciplinary journal operates under a continuous publication model and is classified as Qualis A3 according to the latest CAPES evaluation (2017-2020/2024). Authored by Professors Anna Carolina Simões, Ricardo Luiz Perez Teixeira, and Leonardo Lúcio de Araújo Gouveia, the study investigates how emerging technologies and Industry 4.0 concepts are reshaping engineering curricula. The authors argue that modern engineering education must transcend technical content to include active methodologies and critical thinking, a view supported by recent international frameworks on engineering pedagogy.

Strengthening Regional Research Networks

On March 12, 2021, the UEMG Campus João Monlevade Communication Department highlighted a significant academic achievement in the region. In a news piece titled "Professores da Unidade J. Monlevade publicam artigo científico em revista multidisciplinar," published by Breno Eustáquio, the university celebrated the release of a new study that bridges the gap between educational theory and engineering practice (Eustáquio, 2021). This achievement underscores the university's ongoing commitment to advancing engineering education and research.

The article, titled "Paradigmas curriculares, novas tecnologias e a engenharia", was published in the Revista de Casos e Consultoria (UFRN). It represents a collaborative effort between:

  • Prof. Anna Carolina Simões (UEMG)

  • Prof. Leonardo Lúcio de Araújo Gouveia (UEMG)

  • Prof. Ricardo Luiz Perez Teixeira (UNIFEI)

The Challenge of Curricular Modernization

The central thesis of the published work (Simões et al., 2021) underscores the importance of evolving engineering education to meet 21st-century challenges. As highlighted by international bodies such as UNESCO (2021), engineering is vital for sustainable development, and this research exemplifies regional leadership in advancing innovative curricula that prepare students for future societal needs.

The authors analyze how "new technologies" are not just tools to be learned, but forces that alter how we learn. This aligns with Kamp's (2020) observation that higher engineering education must navigate a landscape of accelerating change, shifting focus from "knowing" to "becoming" an engineer. By integrating active methodologies, the study proposes a curricular paradigm that fosters student autonomy—crucial for engaging with Industry 4.0's complex problems and inspiring ongoing innovation.
