Workshops on Steelmaking and Corrosion: Integrating Theory and Practice in Engineering Education

Abstract:
This report summarizes the "Steelmaking" and "Corrosion" workshops held at UNIFEI, where students presented applied engineering solutions. Topics ranged from optimizing production logistics and reducing setup times in steel plants to analyzing wear in mining grinding media. The activities demonstrate the effective integration of academic theory with industrial challenges through active learning, aiming to reassure industry professionals and researchers of the workshop's relevance and quality.

Event Report: On June 25, 2019, the Coordination of Extension at UNIFEI-Itabira hosted a full-day technical workshop at the José de Alencar Auditorium, designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and industrial reality, providing participants with practical insights into current engineering challenges and solutions.
Student groups actively participated by presenting case studies on:
Process Optimization: Strategies for reducing "Setup" times in valve production and the implementation of Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) techniques in steel industries.
Logistics: Improvements in the supply chain logistics of steel plants.
Material Performance: A critical analysis of abrasive wear on grinding media in mining operations and a comparative study on substituting AISI 1020 for AISI 4130 steel in the UNIFEI BAJA SAE vehicle structure.

Session 2: Corrosion Workshop (Oficina de Corrosão). The afternoon session addressed material degradation and protection methods.
Presentations included:
Inhibitors: The efficiency of natural corrosion inhibitors and the analysis of induced steel corrosion.
Protective Coatings: Painting schemes for offshore maritime structures and zinc coatings applied to wind turbine components to ensure longevity in aggressive environments.
